My paintings spring from my absolute awe of the empty desert, from its tiniest mysteries to its unfathomably huge vistas. Populated areas where the environment has been so manipulated by man lack a sense of connection to nature for me, and I feel most comfortable where I can see long distances.
I felt compelled to make the Big Bend area of Texas my home in 1985, and have not regretted it once. The counter-balance to the vastness here is an almost old-fashioned sense of community. People who love this place stay here - it's an intense, unique, worthy place to spend a life.
In my art I try to convey the elemental nature of this desert environment, with it's ever-changing light, crazy-quilt geology and it's extreme, often chaotic weather.
